Most small businesses are started in basements or garages. Before long, many business owners discover they've gotten into something that's beyond their current knowledge and skill levels.
They have a very difficult time with people and organizational issues. For example, they struggle to find, motivate, leverage and retain great people. They also probably don’t know how to structure their organizations and the flow of work, to optimize productivity, quality, customer satisfaction and scale.
What most business owners do know how to do well is personally “make the widget” or personally “deliver the basic service”. However, some of them discover challenges even beyond people and organization. After a few months or even a year or so, they find themselves overwhelmed with the myriad of issues and decisions to be resolved.
These include proposals and contracts to consider and negotiate, financial (cashflow) issues, customer acquisition/retention issues, risk management issues, strategic issues, competitive issues, etc. The point is, these business owners start second-guessing themselves and begin to realize they don’t know how to “run a business”.
